Smart Energy
Sunshine in December is one of the benefits of living in California, and a benefit that I voted to put to good use as a means to save energy resources and public money. Photovoltaic power systems is one of the many ways I have championed energy savings.
A recent example of results related to policies and standards I have actively developed is taking shape in the form of new construction at the Valley Medical Center campus in San Jose. New parking structures will include the provision of photovoltaic power systems on the structures for the purpose of generating electricity to reduce the demand for commercial power. Electrical output of the combined systems will result in energy cost savings and the new system will enable financial rebates as well.
From my initial year as Fifth District Supervisor in 2001 through today, I have developed sound environmental policy and initiated new practices related to energy conservation. Examples include Co-Chair of the Board's Energy Reduction Task Force in 2001-2002 resulting in energy efficiency standards, bringing forward individual policy initiatives such as reducing electronic waste and developing green building standards, implementing an ordinance to use the least harmful pest reduction methods, initiating our partnership with sustainable Silicon Valley to reduce carbon emissions, and adding alternative fuel and hybrid cars to our fleet.
